Shine
You can’t take my shine, no you can’t (no you can’t)
You can’t take my shine, no you can’t, oh lord
I’m shining big and bright, like the big West Texas sky
You can’t take my shine, no you can’t
Your shade can’t weigh me down, no it can’t (no it can’t)
Your shade can’t weigh me down, no it can’t, oh no
I’ll keep on shining strong, loud and proud just like this song
Your shade can’t weigh me down, no it can’t
Will you come dance and share your shine with me? (shine with me)
Will you come dance and share your shine with me, oh lord
Twice as bright is quite alright, we can hug no need to fight
Will you come dance and share your shine with me?

The Man Who Got Out Alive
Did you hear about the man who didn’t hurt,
Who didn’t cry, got out alive
He was somewhere down the road where demons hide,
The light shines bright, all of the time
I must find this man and talk to him at once,
Before he flies, into the sky
I would ask him how he stayed out of the cloud,
Became the one, who made it out.
‘Cause I tell you my soul is more like this guitar
Rusty strings, a thousand stories, big ol’ scars
And I’ll sing this song out loud until I die, or ‘til I find,
The man who made it out alive
Is he hiding under pink vanilla skies?
Or hitchhiking with a band of purple flies?
Is he singing in a river made of gold?
His music shines, his lyrics glow?
‘Cause I tell you my soul is more like this guitar
Rusty strings, a thousand stories, big ol’ scars
And I’ll sing this song out loud until I die, or ‘til I find,
The man who made it out alive
I keep seeking, and finding empty space, C
Everywhere I look he’s found another place,
I know he’s real just like that ray of sun,
Like blowin’ glass in the empire of my mind.

Volcanoes That He Feels
I’ve got two thousand dollars in the pocket of my shirt
Smith and Wesson, sideways gallop, not sure if we’re going to hell
He says he’s got a guitar that his old man gave to him
Back in 1955, when he had no hair on his chin.
He’s an old desperado, from the mountains in the West
He used to make his guitar wail, with the worst and with the best
And he wants someone to come a get this hunk of wood and steel
He prays someone caresses the volcanoes that he feels
Silver carriage pointing North, I’m gonna pick up my old friend.
He left his home behind just to make sure that I was safe
He thinks that my ideas are a little wild, sometimes
But he likes guitars, songs, and whiskey, and he’s always down to ride
He’s an old desperado, from the mountains in the West
He used to make his guitar wail, with the worst and with the best
And he wants someone to come a get this hunk of wood and steel
He prays someone caresses the volcanoes that he feels
They say songs that have the answers are the ones where we’re not sure
They say doors that you should step through are ones that make you feel all scared
How many songs are locked down deep down in that Martin vault
How many mistakes and regrets that were nobody’s damn fault
He’s an old desperado, from the mountains in the West
He used to make his guitar wail, with the worst and with the best
And he wants someone to come a get this hunk of wood and steel
He prays someone caresses the volcanoes that he feels

Long-Lost Lover
You only get the feeling of a long-lost lover, one time, one time
And every time we try to grasp each other, we fly, so wide
Leave the wounds of our past in the drawer, by the flickering light
You only get the feeling of a long-lost lover, one time.
Like a new record that you get to hold, I wanna feel every groove of your soul
Kiss the music from behind you ear, let you know that I’m finally here
Who knows where tomorrow will go? I don’t know, oh no
I just know I get to hold you right now as time slows down
You only get the feeling of a long-lost lover, one time, one time
And every time we try to grasp each other, we fly, so wide
Leave the wounds of our past in the drawer, by the flickering light
You only get the feeling of a long-lost lover, one time.
Never thought I would find you again, unpredictable fate brought you in
You bit your lip from across the room, and you gave that old rose a new bloom
You were always somewhere in my heart, I can’t believe that it all fell apart.
It don’t matter as we hold each other, yeah, tonight
You only get the feeling of a long-lost lover, one time, one time
And every time we try to grasp each other, we fly, so wide
Leave the wounds of our past in the drawer, by the flickering light
You only get the feeling of a long-lost lover, one time.
And you’re walking right out of the room, and you’re heading right back to the moon
As we flowed in our infinite light, I thought this time we could make it right
But cold destiny came to get you, and I don’t know how to forget you
Just know we’ll be forever stuck in time
You only get the feeling of a long-lost lover, one time, one time
And every time we try to grasp each other, we fly, so wide
Leave the wounds of our past in the drawer, by the flickering light
You only get the feeling of a long-lost lover, one time.

Gas Station Denim
Some people buy their clothes from a department store
Others get their threads delivered straight to their door
I can clean up nicely, it depends on the occasion
And I prefer to buy my denim from my favorite gas station
Right next to the coffee, you can get a donut too
You can get it any color just as long as it’s blue
If you need any other garments, another place may be best
Unless it’s a bright-yellow trucker safety vest
Gas station denim, it gets my Chevy in gear
Gas station denim, money left over for beer
Gas station denim, like Guy Clark’s Stuff That Works
Gas station denim, a big thumbs-up from the clerk
Gas station denim’s like a pawn shop guitar
It’s got the stories it’ll help you go far
You ask me to, reconsider my situation
I kindly ask you to, reassess your gas station
Gas station denim, it gets my Chevy in gear
Gas station denim, money left over for beer
Gas station denim, like Guy Clark’s Stuff That Works
Gas station denim, a big thumbs-up from the clerk
Been twenty minutes, I come back to the car
She says “where have you been, you didn’t go far”
I flash a smile and tell I am not hurt
As I roll up the sleeves of my new denim shirt
Gas station denim, it gets my Chevy in gear
Gas station denim, money left over for beer
Gas station denim, like Guy Clark’s Stuff That Works
Gas station denim, a big thumbs-up from the clerk
